Korea’s export of Halal products as of 2016 took up only 5.7 percent of the total exports to the market.

The Korea International Trade Association (KITA) opened a business support center to help domestic businesses gain greater access to the international halal product market at the Trade Tower in Samsung-dong, southern Seoul, on June 22, proving seminars and one-to-one consulting services.

Previously, KITA Vice Chairman Kim Jung-kwan, Korea Halal Export Association (KOHEA) Chairman Choi Seong-chul, Korean Institute of Halal Industry (KIHI) Director Jang Gun met to sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly operate “Halal Export Counseling Center.” The three parties will share information about halal certification and market strategy for halal market.

Halal, which means permitted or lawful in Arabic, refers all acts in everyday life permissible to Muslims according to Islamic laws. In South Korea, halal is considered prohibition of pork. However, religious taboos should be completely excluded in the whole process of production, processing, packaging and distribution in order to gain halal certifications. South Korean companies have excellent product competitiveness but fail to effectively target Muslim consumers, who account for more than 20 percent of the total population, due to a lack of understanding of the halal market. According to the data compiled by the KITA, Korea’s export of Halal products as of 2016 took up only 5.7 percent of the total exports to the market.

Housed at the first floor of the Trade Tower in southern Seoul, the Halal Export Counseling Center will provide halal business information and customized consulting services to South Korean small and mid-sized companies. A halal certification and market expert employed by the KIHI will come to the office once a week on every Tuesday and the KITA’s research center will also employ halal experts to release regular reports. Companies visiting the Halal Export Counseling Center can be offered with halal certification and support programs according to export countries and items. Meanwhile, the KITA opened a prayer room for Muslims at the COEX in January last year. It has been also supporting religious activities of more than 1,000 Muslim visitors a year, expanding culture contact between the two countries.
