17 million products seized over use of fakehalal logos

SERI KEMBANGAN: The Domestic Trade andConsumer Affairs Ministry has seized 17 million products nationwide over theuse of fake halal logos.

 

“As of August, we registered 41 cases ofthe use of fake halal logos. We confiscated 17 million products,“ said theministry’s deputy secretary-general Datuk Muez Abd Aziz said at theannouncement of the Halfest Giant 2018 Halal Expo at the Malaysia InternationalExhibition and Convention Centre (MIECC) here today.

 

The expo is set to run for five days fromSept 26 at the MIECC.

 

Muez told an audience of 500 traders thatthe ministry viewed the issue of counterfeit halal logos seriously because thehalal food industry had the potential to contribute US$560 billion (RM2.3trillion) a year.

 

“We view seriously the use of fake halallogos which has become an issue. They (perpetrators) can be quite creative,” hesaid.

 

“They do not want to apply for halal certificates.Using a counterfeit halal logo is an offence under the Trade Description Act2011.”

 

Shapers Malaysia Sdn Bhd chief executiveofficer Datuk Mohd Shukri Abdullah said the expo was a way to boost thecompetitiveness of halal product traders nationwide.

 

He said traders would be able to shareideas and learn from one another at the expo.

 

The expo, which is being held for theseventh time, aims to attract 150,000 visitors. The 677 booths are expected tooffer goods at discounted prices.
